MSCI’s Indonesia decision is due by June 2027. Here’s the road there.

After MSCI proposed moving Indonesia from Emerging to Standalone Market status, the next question is what happens between now and the decision. Here are the dates, what MSCI says could change its view, how past cases went, and three plain paths.

1. The dates

MSCI accepts feedback until 30 April 2027 and will announce its decision by the end of June 2027. The release does not say when a reclassification would take effect. Until further notice, MSCI keeps its freeze on certain index changes for Indonesian securities. [1]

2. What could change the outcome

MSCI says it expects to proceed with the reclassification unless the consultation identifies clear evidence of material improvements in market governance and functioning. The release mentions the authorities’ measures, including enhanced disclosure of shareholders owning more than 1% and a roadmap toward a 15% minimum free float, and says institutional investors want consistent implementation and evidence of a lasting effect. [1]

3. Past cases

Pakistan. MSCI consulted in June 2021 on moving Pakistan from Emerging to Frontier Markets, confirmed it in September 2021, and implemented it in one step at the November 2021 index review. [2]
Nigeria. MSCI announced in October 2023 that Nigeria would move from Frontier to Standalone Markets in one step; it took effect at the February 2024 index review, citing long-running foreign-exchange illiquidity. [3] [4]
Argentina. MSCI announced in June 2021 that Argentina would lose Emerging Market status over its 2019 capital controls; it became a Standalone Market in November 2021. In June 2025, MSCI still kept it as Standalone. [5] [6]

4. Three plain paths

These are scenarios, not forecasts, and we give no odds. If reforms show clear, lasting results, Indonesia could stay Emerging. If progress is partial, the decision could be delayed or extended. If nothing material changes, MSCI has said it expects to proceed to Standalone.

5. The test

Past cases show what MSCI did, not what markets did afterwards; we do not claim any price or flow effects here. Watch for evidence that the reforms work in practice before 30 April 2027.
