AI agents are starting to pay for things on their own.
Software can now pay for things a few cents at a time. It is real, and it is still tiny. Here are the numbers, in plain English, with every source.

1. What x402 is
x402 is a web standard that lets software pay for a service automatically, using the old “402 Payment Required” web code. By 21 April 2026 it had handled about 109.6 million payments worth about $15 million, after removing test and wash activity. That is roughly 14 cents each. Other counts use different filters, so the numbers do not match exactly. [1]
2. What it runs on
Most measured on-chain agent payments use digital dollars (stablecoins). Card networks are building payments for AI agents as well. [1]
3. Rules
The US stablecoin law (the GENIUS Act, Public Law 119-27) must take effect by 18 January 2027 at the latest. [2]
4. The test
A 2026 USENIX Security study tested 15 x402 payment services and found that all 15 broke at least one security rule; the issues were since fixed. Not every “agent” payment is made by an autonomous AI. [3]
